Create a one-of-a-kind fabric strap using scrap fabrics to match your bag!

Quick & Easy Bag Strap Tutorial

  • Fabric Choice: Most fabrics can be used with suitable interfacing (e.g. for thin or stretchy fabrics).

  • Finished Size: This tutorial shows how to make a fabric strap for a crossbody phone bag. Finished size: 1 cm × 150 cm. Typical crossbody strap length is 110–130 cm. Ours is longer to suit the attachment method and desired look. Feel free to adjust the size to your personal preference.

  • Fabric Needed: If using a single piece of fabric, cut it 2 cm longer than the finished length and 4× the finished width. Alternatively, you can join several shorter pieces to create one long strip.

Step 1. We used leftover indigo plant-dyed cotton fabrics in different shades for this project. Cut the fabrics into 4 cm-wide strips. Join the short ends right sides together, stitch with a 3–5 mm seam allowance, trim both sides of the seam allowance, and press the seams open.

(If using a single piece of fabric, cut it into a 4 × 152 cm strip.)

Step 2. Fold one end of the strip in half (right sides together), then fold in half again.

Stitch along the edge with a 3–5 mm seam allowance. Trim the seam allowance as shown in the photo.

Open the layers along the long raw edges, then turn the folded end right side out. Push out the corners.

Do the same with the other end.

Fold long raw edges to the centre, fold in half, and press. Topstitch 1–2 mm from the edge on all sides.

Congratulations! The bag strap is now complete!
